How have you encouraged or supported children to reach their goals or engage in behaviors that are appropriate to the situation they are in?

In addition to giving directions verbally, depending on the child’s needs, write them down or use pictures. Sudden changes or ambiguous directions are hard for many kids, so try to show a plan visually so they know what’s coming. Try to notice and praise them when they were able to do something.

How have you managed children’s behaviors when they were causing troubles for themselves or bothering other people?

Help a child distance themselves from something or someone they are having difficulties with. First, try to help them calm down by not stimulating them. Depending on the child’s needs, touch them gently or talk to them quietly. Once the child is calm, listen to them talk about what happened, making sure that they know I am listening. Help a child calm down by having them hold something (toy, stuffed doll, etc) they like. Wait for them to reflect on their behavior.

What types of support or information would you like to have in supporting children?

We need more human resources. An environment where multiple adults are available to support children.
